[WISET-KWiSE SF Global Mentoring Program – June Meeting Recap]
The June session of the WISET-KWiSE SF Chapter’s Global Mentoring Program focused on exploring a wide range of career paths in STEM. We compared the characteristics, advantages, and challenges of careers in academia, government and public institutions, and industry. The session also included practical guidance on how to find relevant opportunities—such as graduate school programs, public sector job postings, and industry roles.
To offer deeper insight, four speakers representing each sector shared their personal experiences and career journeys. Their stories provided mentees with real-world perspectives on what it’s like to work in each field. For mentees who are still exploring their options, the session concluded with a set of reflective questions designed to help them consider key factors in making informed career decisions.
During the small group discussions that followed, participants actively engaged in conversations around graduate admissions, international job searches, and workplace culture and lifestyle across sectors. We plan to compile and share mentors’ responses to frequently asked questions from these sessions for future reference.
Looking ahead, the July meeting will focus on the fundamentals of writing resumes (CVs) and cover letters, which are essential for both academic and industry job applications. Mentees will also have the opportunity to receive feedback on their submitted documents.

6월 WISET-KWiSE SF 지부 글로벌 멘토링 프로그램에서는 STEM 분야의 다양한 진로 옵션을 주제로 세미나가 진행되었습니다. 이번 세션에서는 학계, 공공 및 정부 기관, 산업계 등 주요 진로 방향을 비교하며, 각각의 경로에서 어떤 기회들이 있는지에 대해 다뤘습니다. 대학원 진학, 공공 부문 채용 정보 탐색, 산업계 취업 기회 등을 찾는 방법에 대해서도 구체적인 정보를 공유했습니다.
특히, 각 분야를 대표하는 네 분의 연사분들이 직접 자신의 경험을 나누며, 참가자들이 실제 진로를 선택하고 준비하는 데 실질적인 도움을 받을 수 있도록 했습니다. 아직 진로를 결정하지 못한 멘티들을 위해, 진로 선택 시 고려해야 할 핵심 요소들을 점검할 수 있는 가이드 질문들도 함께 제시되었습니다.
이후 진행된 소그룹 세션에서는 대학원 입학 준비, 해외 취업, 직장 내 문화와 생활 등에 대한 다양한 질문이 이어졌으며, 이에 대한 멘토들의 답변은 추후 자료로 정리해 공유할 예정입니다.
한편, 7월 미팅에서는 학계 및 산업계 지원을 위한 이력서(CV) 및 커버레터 작성의 기본을 주제로 워크숍이 진행될 예정입니다다. 멘티들은 사전 제출한 이력서와 커버레터에 대한 개별 피드백도 받을 수 있으니 많은 참여 바랍니다.
